It all happened in May… Sergei Sviatchenko, the artist and curator of Senko Studio in Viborg, was invited by Maurizio Coccia - director of the world-famous Flash Art Museum based in Trevi, Italy - to be one of the 16 artists participating to a one-week workshop with the students of 7 primary and secondary schools of Umbria. Umbria – as many of you already know – is considered the “green heart of Italy”, as it lies right in the centre of the Italian country, next to Tuscany.

Sviatchenko and Coccia had already met in Viborg, while setting up the ground-breaking exhibition “On the Wall”, presented at Senko Gallery in January; Coccia was in fact the curator of that successful exhibition. When the two met, one of the things they discussed was how to establish a long-term relationship between Flash Art Museum and Senko Studio. Both of these institutions are much more than just exhibition spaces open to the best international contemporary artists; this year, in fact, they established themselves as Cultural, Non-Profit Associations working to promote Contemporary Art in Europe and throughout the world.

The workshops with the students at Flash Art Museum saw their first, successful edition in 2004 in Trevi, the small Umbrian town where the Museum linked with the internationally renowned Flash Art magazine has been set up 11 years ago. And so it went that Coccia, director of the Museum and creator of the Contemporary Art teaching project based on the workshops - where students and artists work side by side – asked Sviatchenko to join the group of contemporary artists he was enrolling for the 2005 edition of the workshops.

When he arrived in Trevi, accompanied by his daughter Alexandra, Sviatchenko began to work with the young students, developing with them a number of individual and collective works based on the transformation of their own image - that is the image of their own faces – using the powerful technique of collage, which he masters and brings to the complexity of a fully developed language. Sergei and Alexandra helped the students assemble dozens and dozens of uncannily original self-portraits, where the students had the chance to express their creative feelings and throbbing visual fantasy. After the end of the workshop week, the works that the students had jointly developped with the 16 artists were exhibited in a caleidoscopic collective show, where almost as many different techniques and approaches to Contemporary Art could be assessed and appreciated. Next day were the opening of the exhibition of artists own works in Trevi Flash Art Museum for contemporary art.

From that exciting experience, Sviatchenko and Coccia jointly moved on to a further development of the workshop idea: next year, they will set up in Denmark an even larger teaching program - in parallel with the one which will still be held in Trevi – that is meant to be offered to a number of schools of the Viborg Municipality. Artists from different European countries will join in, and contribute to establish one more link between all the participating nations in a co-operative and creative spirit, which is the very genuine spirit of Art.
